The Department of Botany, established in the year 1965, is located near the administrative block in the first floor. The Department has seen many distinguished faculty members who toiled to improve the infrastructure, to introduce state of the art instruments and valuable reference materials, besides imparting curricular knowledge to the students of Botany.

The Department was fortunate enough to have the presence of Shri Seetharama Rai K, and Sri A. Ramachandra Bhat in the formative years. The duo had the distinction of being experts in the field of Taxonomy & Anatomy of Algae, Gymnosperms, Angiosperms, Plant Physiology, Ecology and Conservation Biology, etc. And now, Prof. Srikrishna Ganaraja Bhat S., is leading the department with the constant support from Dr. Smitha P.G. and Dr. Sowmithra K.; striving hard to disseminate knowledge related to classical and applied topics on plant science. Laboratory has been upgraded with gadgets like LAF hood, Hot Air Oven, Micrometry, Trinocular Research microscope with camera and screen, Stereomicroscope, Autoclave, etc. to cater to the needs of student folks as well as to develop technical skills among them.

During the course of the three years, the Undergraduate students learn Botany along with Zoology or Chemistry as a core subject as per the NEP 2020. They involve themselves in externally funded projects, self-financed small research projects, taxonomy related field visits, intercollegiate fests (both cultural and science), participate in programs such as  leadership training, career counseling, interview skill building, student placements, gender equity workshops,  understanding sustainable development goals, Swachh Bharath mission, environmental awareness programs, Nature Club and other Associations’ activities, certificate courses and many more.  The Department is partaking in “In Depth” Program in which 10th standard students of the taluk are better exposed to their curriculum through simple experiments and demonstrations by undergraduate students of Botany.

Some of our students have successfully completed SPICE (Science Project in College Education) projects funded by VGST, Govt. of Karnataka.  The student and faculty members were involved in the biodiversity study of Kodachadri, a hill range in Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. This project was funded by ISRO, Govt. of India.  The finding of this study has been published as a book entitled, “Biodiversity of Kodachadri Hill Range”, by Vivekananda Centre for Research Studies, VVS, Puttur (2013).
