A career in the news media industry is an exciting and rewarding path to follow, but it&#39 simportant to gain the right knowledge and practical skills in order to succeed. The Department of
Mass communication and Journalism trains and educates journalism's future leaders and trailblazers. Our tradition is rooted in the bedrock values of journalistic ethics and excellence, but
department also leaders of cutting-edge journalistic innovation and media scholarship. Here, students get training to go deeper and equip them with subject-area expertise, so they can explain
complicated issues to the public. Students develop an intellectual grounding in their concentration that enables them to ask more informed questions, evaluate evidence for competing theories and produce sophisticated and nuanced stories. MCJ department focused on the study and exploration of media—how to develop content that is informative, accurate, strategic, persuasive, entertaining, creative, targeted, and sharable through any media platform. The Department of Mass communication and Journalism will always student-centered in its approach to learning and scholarship. Our faculties are scholars and researchers exploring the impact of media and messaging. Vivekananda Multimedia Studio and Community Radio of the college incubate the students for professional growth. Digital creations of the student and staff are made available to the public through a YouTube Channel. Through undergraduate and postgraduate programs focused on broadcast, print and convergence media, the department will give students the best possible platform from which to begin a successful career in the industry. The department will recognize the centrality of media in a democratic society, contributing to a vibrant, participatory culture. In reaching our objectives, we are guided by the principles of collaboration, innovation, and creativity, as well as traditional values of communication in guiding students in the development of core competencies and proficiency with emergent media. The department of MCJ Vivekananda college Puttur, this is where today’s dreams for tomorrow’s creativity can be shaped. It provides both theoretical and practical knowledge of media, the result of which, students are gaining professionalism in Photography, Video Editing, Anchoring, Reporting and other forms of Writing, Documentary Preparation etc. To encourage these writers or to give them a professional touch, Vivekananda College started Journalism course.

History of the Department
The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism established in 2017 offers a two year Post graduate course leading to Master of Arts (Journalism and Mass Communication) degree.
The department offers practical training with full pledged Multi Media Studio for students tobring out a video bulletin 'Vikasana' on a weekly, 'Vikasa' a weekly broadsheet, Radio Panchajanya 90.8 FM, a community radio programme and 'Vinuthana', a practice magazine on a monthly basis. Also 'Patrakartha Mestru', a special Journalistic training program and 'Jana Mana', a special program to reach out the public by the department. The department has 'Nayana Photographic Club' a training centre for video and photography. The department has a well equipped Multi Media Studio with Video / TV cameras, cool lights, teleprompter, digital still camera and other facilities. Latest editing software are used to provide practical training for the students. A well developed computer laboratory with several PCs and broadband internet facility is available for the students. Department of MCJ Vivekananda College Puttur, this is where today's dreams for tomorrow's creativity can be shaped. It provides both theoretical and Practical knowledge of Media, the result of which, students are gaining professionalism in Video Editing, Anchoring, Reporting, Feature Writing Editing, Script writing, Documentary Preparation Etc. The Department has been
working as a bridge between the Media personnel and Journalism Students. Many professional Journalists, PROs, Film Directors, Actors, Creative Writers, Radio Jockeys regularly visit the
department and share their knowledge. Experienced and dedicated faculty members are striving to make the students not just academically strong but also professionally.

The students of Journalism will be able to:
 Discuss the history of Journalism and its practices
 Report, write and edit an accurate balanced and complete news story in long-form print, online, and radio style
 Summarize the main ideas to be extracted from the information gathered
 Describe the role of Journalism in a diverse global society
 Demonstrate the skills necessary to successfully perform the tasks expected of a reporter, editor or producer
 Describe the role and the context of the media in the democracy and global society
 Understand intellectual property, copyright and fair use of copy writed material

 Demonstrate the ability for critical reasoning and analysis of complex issues in the media and society
 Apply professional ethical principles in pursuit of truth, accuracy, fairness and diversity
 Explain the values of customs, laws and practices of professional journalists
 Apply appropriate tools and technologies for the communication and professional work
 Communicate effectively by presenting complex information in a clear and concise manner orally, on paper and using ICT.
 Demonstrate information technology skills, especially in the areas of information retrieval, literature searching and library databases.
 Undertake applied work and research projects
 Use opportunities for continuing professional education to enhance their professional  development
 Acquire knowledge, skills and attitude to become more suitable for the present and emerging employment market.
