The Department of History is as old as the college and it is catering to the needs of the students since the inception of the college in 1965. For a very long period, there was only one combination in B.A. degree course with History as the major subject. But recently more combinations are added in B.A course with History as the major as well as an Open Elective subject.
From the very beginning, the Department was lucky enough to get some of the highly qualified, dedicated and efficient staff. For instance, S. N. Divakar, Dr. B. Surendra Rao, Prof. V. B. Arthikaje and Dr. Peter Wilson Prabhakar have served in the Department and well-known author of several research books.
The Department of History has its own museum. The Department organises seminars, workshops and Guest Lectures to enhance the knowledge for staff and students regarding the history, heritage and culture.
Department of History organized one day National Level Seminar on “Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu: An Analysis of Modern Experiences” in association with Kodava Samskritika Adhyayana Peeta, Mangalore University, on 12-12-2022. The Department organized “Prakrita Diploma Certificate Course” in association with National Institute of Prakrit Study Centre, Shravana Belagola. The Department made MoU with Rani Abbakka Tulu Adhyayana Kendra, B.C. Road, Kukke Sri Subrahmanyeswara College, Subrahmanya and National Institute of Prakrit Study Centre, Shravana Belagola. The Department organises extension activities also.
The staff members presently associated with the Department are also making every effort to improve their knowledge, skill and efficiency through research work and they have presented papers in the National and International Seminars and workshops.
The College is located in the outskirts of Puttur town beside Mysore – Mangalore State Highway, spread over a sprawling campus of nearly 50 acres dotted with green vegetation.
