The Department of Physics of Vivekananda College of Arts, Science & Commerce (Autonomous) Puttur has been maintaining high standards in the teaching of Physics since 1965, the year in which it was established.
Prof. D. Shivarama Bhat was the first Head of the department when it was started in 1965. Dr. P. Radhakrishna Karanth and Dr. K P L Moodithaya were the members of the Department who laid a good foundation to the Department.

The faculty of the Physics department takes much care to pay individual attention to the students in their laboratory work, project work and solving problems. All the efforts are made to develop an innovative approach towards learning of physics.
As an outreach Activity, the department has been conducting a special programme ‘Demonstration of Physics Experiments’ to nearby high school students since 1984.
Many ranks in the university level have been bagged by the students in the Mangalore University examinations. Our students have carried out many projects and built science models, which have won prizes at various levels.

The College is located in the outskirts of Puttur town beside Mysore – Mangalore State Highway, spread over a sprawling campus of nearly 50 acres dotted with green vegetation.
