History of the Institution

Origin and Background (1915–1965)

The foundation of the college is closely linked to the establishment of the Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka Sangha (VVS), originally known as the Puttur Education Society, founded in 1915. This organization emerged during the colonial period with the aim of providing accessible, value-oriented education to rural and economically weaker sections.

Prominent visionaries such as Molahalli Shiva Rao, Baindoor Rama Rao, and Dr. Kota Shivarama Karanth, Urimajalu Rama Bhat played key roles in shaping the educational movement in the region.

Establishment of the College (1965)

The college was founded in 1965 under the management of the Vivekananda Vidyavardhaka Sangha. It was named after Swami Vivekananda, whose philosophy emphasized man-making education, nationalism, and character building.

The institution was started with the objective of:

  • Promoting higher education in rural areas
  • Preserving Indian culture and values
  • Developing responsible and socially committed citizens

Initially, it functioned with basic facilities but gradually expanded in infrastructure, faculty, and academic programs.

Growth and Development (1965–2000s)

  • Adoption of ICT-enabled teaching and research culture

These developments strengthened its reputation as one of the leading institutions in Dakshina Kannada.

Autonomous Status and Recent Phase

In recent years, the college attained autonomous status, marking a significant milestone in its history. This allowed:

  • Academic flexibility in curriculum design
  • Innovative teaching and evaluation methods

Greater focus on research and skill development

The college celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2015, symbolizing 50 years of academic excellence and service.

Today, it offers multiple undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with a strong emphasis on value-based and holistic education with the commitment to the ideals of Swami Vivekananda—education for character, competence, and nation-building.
